GRANDMOTHERS TALES WINS TWO PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS - May 2011
Author Surrey Blackburn, is recognized by Bay Area Independent Publisher Association for her true account of life as a child growing up in war torn England.
Surrey Blackburn, a grandmother who told her stories of growing up in World War II England has won the Bay Area Independent Publishers 2011 Award for Best Juvenile History. The illustrator of the book Gabhor Utomo, also received an award for Best Illustrator of a Childrens Book.
The book tells, through the eyes of a happy young girl all of the challenges of living in a country at war. The gas masks, ration books, air raid shelters, endless queues and emergency evacuation. Each tale ends with a commentary made by the authors granddaughter, India Cale. They reveal the wonder of another generation looking back in time, with an obvious love and devotion for the author, her grandmother.
Bay Area Independent Publishers Association is a non-profit organization, which since 1979 has been dedicated to educating and elevating the art of the independent author publisher. Their judges praised the delightful, natural story telling style of the tales, the vintage look of the book and its historic importance.
The author, a former high school English teacher, delights in visiting schools with her book and telling even more revealing stories about this time in history. She always donates a copy of her book to the school library.
You do not have to be a student of history, or a juvenile to enjoy this award-winning book.
